They can't
sit still, their bodies are like noodles, and
they'd much rather being throwing rocks into a pond than trying to
twist
themselves into funny shapes.
But here's what kids ARE good
at: trying something new.
Their whole life is about diving into the unknown!
The other
day, I was watching this cheesy movie with my
daughter about street dancers in Baltimore, and without even thinking,
she
started break dancing!
She tried to
do a handstand, stall on her elbows, and kick
from bridge to standing. She couldn't really do it, but you know what?
She wasn't
that far off!
When it comes
to body awareness and coordination, young
children really just don't have much of it. But that doesn't stop them
from
sucking up knowledge like a Hoover, and not from books, or hours of
planning,
or years of dreaming – they just try it! And then they cry.
And then try
it again, and again, and again until they get
old enough to start worrying about what other people think.
And that's
when it becomes pure torture just to drop down
into a simple pose like the full frontal splits!
Kids are
cool, and because they KNOW that they don't know
much, that's why they can learn and change and grow more in a couple
days than
you or I can in an entire year.
I swear, last
weekend, I saw brain cells multiplying right
before my eyes. Handstand, handstand! Do it again!
Gotta love
that.
Stay bendy,
Lucas
