Food and yoga don't really mix.
Students are always
coming up with a million reasons why they have to eat
before they practice, but from a purely physical standpoint, your body just performs best
(for yoga)
when your G.I. tract is empty.
You'll feel lighter, stronger, more energetic, and absolutely more
flexible
than you will with even a light meal inside you.
I know, I know, your blood sugar is low and you just love to wake up
and eat a
cream cheese bagel and coffee right away.
Food habits are hard to break, but really, most are just habits. You
can form
new ones, usually after just 2-3 weeks of practice.
Back in my corporate warrior days, I used to guzzle two cups of heavy
cream
coffee on my way to the gym and suck down a Powerbar before flailing on the Stairmaster for 30
minutes.
In retrospect, I probably would have been better off just sleeping.
This is why most serious yoga students practice first thing in the
morning. You
wake up, clear your
bowels, do your practice, and then get on with it.
If you do prefer to practice later in the day, or if that's the only
time you
have available, just make
sure you haven't eaten in at least 4-5 hours.
I know, your blood sugar, your cravings, believe me, 4-5 hours you can
do!
Really, you can.
Your gut is a like Grand Central for your nervous system, and if
there's cereal
and a glass of OJ
sloshing around in there, it completely changes the electromagnetic
flow of
energy, not in a bad way,
just in a different way.
Think of people who are hungry for knowledge, hungry for opportunity,
hungry
for success; it
goes way beyond just the physical too.
It's great to be hungry for yoga. You'll stop thinking about the food,
and move
deeper.
Stay bendy,
Lucas
